Affecting Factors of Drinking Behavior and Drinking Problems in University Students

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate factors associated with drinking behavior and drinking problem.

Methods: Participants were 215 university students in their first to fourth year of the study. Data were collected from July 22 to August 5. The questionnaire used contained items on general characteristics, types of personality (extroverted or introverted type), stress coping styles, drinking behavior (quantity and frequency) and drinking problems. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis were performed.

Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that the correlates of higher level of drinking behavior were male, not residing parent¡¯s house, club activity, and extroverted personality. The correlates of higher level of drinking problems were higher grade and emotion-focused stress coping style.

Conclusion: The present study indicated that stress copy style and personality should be considered in drinking problem prevention program for university students.
